Review #6: A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas

Unpopular opinion alert! I should have known going into it that despite the hype, ACOTAR was not going to be my jam because I don’t love magic and fantasy. I give this one 5/10 for personal reasons, understanding that it is wildly popular and a fan favorite. I also felt like I was reading Beauty and the Beast for the first 200 pages.

I believe it is good to read novels, genres, authors, and topics that you normally don’t read. New books give new perspectives and open up your eyes. I am glad I read this book and don’t feel like I wasted my time. Reading is never time wasted! I will also read more books in the series because I am curious about how it progresses, so maybe I am not a hater after all.

High Level: Feyre is a nineteen year old human who kills a faerie while hunting in the woods and is then punished for it. She is taken to Prythian, the faerie world, to atone for the killing and while she is there she learns new truths about the mysterious and vicious world of faeries.

Three words I would use to describe this book… fantasy, curse, mysterious

Characters: There are many characters in this book, but only a few main ones that the reader must focus on. In my opinion, the author didn’t get deep enough into any of the characters to feel deeply connected to them.

Plot: The plot is why you read the book! The plot moves fast and despite my hate, it is a page turner at the end because I just needed to know what happened. It is definitely entertaining and kept moving along. Never slow or dull.

Prose: Nothing of note, well written for a “cheesy fantasy novel”

You will like this book if you like… fantasy, Beauty and the Beast, romance novels (its light on the romance but it is there), books to escape into
