Review #9: Gone, But Not Forgotten by Philip Margolin

Rating this one 5/10 or 2.5/5 but 3 on Goodreads. I imagine this as a book that men would read on their train commute in the 1990s. It is a well crafted mystery, but feels a bit dated reading it in 2023. When I read the initial description, I thought we were going to learn more about the wives of affluent men who were missing, which is up my alley, but we didn’t at all, so that was a loss for me.

Vibe: Suspense, mysterious, and eerie. I wouldn’t read this book alone at night in the dark.

Describe the book in three words: Trigger Warning, Mystery, Murder

Plot: The novel takes place in Seattle, where the same string of murders occurs as ten years prior in Upstate New York. Wives of affluent men are going missing with the clue as a note left behind that reads “Gone, But Not Forgotten” alongside a black rose. The tale unfolds as a legal, political thriller with a side of murder.

Characters: Tell me something that is sexist without being sexist. The characters in the novel are a bit old school. Within the first few pages, Darius is having sex with a woman who he is totally dominating. I suspect that was to appeal to the reader? (In addition to have the reader understand his character, but I have read enough to know there are other ways…) For a silly book, gender is discussed frequently and the very traditional gender roles are a bit icky. Each of the women who go missing were stay at home wives… come on!

You’ll like this if you like… John Grisham, political thrillers, Law & Order
